Today's Fact
A cosmic chess match, a comatose princess, and the one decision that haunted Kang longer than any lost war.
Princess Ravonna, the woman Kang loved, lay suspended between life and death after taking a shot meant for him, and no science of the 41st century could wake her. When the cosmic gamesman called the Grandmaster offered Kang a wager — win a contest of champions and receive power over life and death itself — Kang accepted at once, drafting the Avengers as his unwilling playing pieces.
His team delivered. Across Avengers Vol. 1 #69–71 (1969) the Avengers fought the Grandmaster's freshly created Squadron Sinister and then the wartime Invaders, and Kang claimed the match. But an earlier round had ended in a stalemate, so the prize shrank to a single choice: the power of life, spent on Ravonna, or the power of death, spent on the Avengers who had just burst in to confront him.
Kang picked revenge. Certain his own genius would find another route to Ravonna, he took the gift of death and struck the Avengers down where they stood — and the whole triumph collapsed on a technicality, because Dane Whitman, the Black Knight, was not yet an Avenger, stood outside the gift's reach, and knocked the conqueror flat with one blow of the Ebony Blade.
Why It's Obscure
He risked a planet for love, then traded love away for spite in a single heartbeat.
