Today's Fact

After losing to the Avengers, the conqueror of the fortieth century tried a quieter weapon: a mayor's office in Wisconsin.

KANG CONQUERED THE 20TH CENTURY BY BECOMING A SMALL-TOWN MAYOR — VICTOR TIMELY FOUNDED A WISCONSIN TOWN AND HID CHRONOPOLIS INSIDE IT!
The Featured Fact

Defeated in his debut battle in Avengers Vol. 1 #8 (1964), Kang changed tactics completely. He travelled back to January 1, 1901, grew a moustache, and reinvented himself as Victor Timely, founding the town of Timely, Wisconsin and serving as its first mayor, a secret history revealed in Avengers Annual Vol. 1 #21 (1992) during the Citizen Kang storyline.

Behind the mayoral portrait sat the real project. Timely Industries taught twentieth-century workers the basic principles of robotics and computer science decades early, seeding technology Kang could exploit later, while in the exact same spot, shifted just out of phase with the timestream, he built Chronopolis, his palace-city and crossroads to every era, invisible and undetectable to everyone living in the town above it.

The disguise was built to outlast a human life. When Victor Timely needed to age and die in public, robotic stand-ins and successor identities, a son and then a grandson who looked suspiciously alike, kept the same man in charge of Timely for generations. Kang had not abandoned conquest at all. He had simply decided to conquer a century by owning the town it started in.
