KANG FATHERED TWENTY-THREE SONS, NAMED THEM ALL MARCUS — AND HAD EVERY ONE OF THEM PUT TO DEATH!
The Featured Fact

An empire that spans all of time still dies with its founder — unless there is an heir. So Kang the Conqueror went shopping for one the way he does everything: as a military program. He selected women across the eras for their genetic potential, fathered sons on scattered worlds, and gave every single boy the same name — Marcus — before shipping each one off to be raised as a soldier and commander. Time travel compressed the experiment: a son's whole upbringing to adulthood took roughly a month of Kang's own life, and he dropped in every two weeks to grade the results.

The grading was final. Any Marcus who fell short of his father's standard — in skill, in judgment, in loyalty — was put to death. And Kang did not bury the failures. He kept their bodies preserved in state in a private chamber: a progress report written in identical corpses. Twenty-two sons failed the inspection. The twenty-third attempt — a boy sent with his mother twenty-five years into the past of a secluded planet — grew from a clumsy youth into a warrior who surpassed his own teachers, and his father finally had an heir he could look at without reaching for a knife.

Kang outfitted that twenty-third Marcus with a name and armor that were already secondhand: the Scarlet Centurion, an identity a younger Kang had once worn and discarded himself. Father and son then did what Kangs do — in the Kang Dynasty saga (Avengers Vol. 3, 2001–2002) they invaded the present day from the sword-shaped Damocles Base and conquered the Earth outright, forcing the world's surrender. But Marcus made the one error no Marcus had survived making in spirit: he fell for Carol Danvers — the Avenger then called Warbird — secretly aided her in the fighting, and lied to Kang about it afterward.

When the Avengers finally broke the conquest, Kang was captured and perfectly content: he had built an empire, won his war, and fathered a worthy heir, and he meant to die on that résumé. Marcus rescued him instead — and Kang, robbed of his honorable death, led his son into the private chamber he had never been shown. Twenty-two preserved bodies, all wearing his own face. Kang admitted he would have forgiven the aid to Warbird if Marcus had only confessed it; the lie was unforgivable. He stabbed his last son in Avengers Vol. 3 #55 (2002) — and never made a twenty-fourth.

Why It's Obscure

Twenty-three sons, one name, and a family vault measured in corpses.

23
The production run — Kang treated fatherhood like manufacturing: one blueprint, one name, twenty-three units, and quality control enforced at sword-point.
22
The morgue — the failed Marcuses were not buried, burned, or mourned. They were preserved in state in Kang's private chambers, waiting for the twenty-third to come and read the report.
1 Month
The childhoods — courtesy of time travel, each son's entire raising from cradle to commander fit inside about a month of Kang's life. He visited every two weeks. Imagine that parent-teacher conference.
1968
The hand-me-down — the Scarlet Centurion armor Marcus earned was his father's castoff: a younger Kang had worn that identity himself, in Avengers Annual #2, decades before passing it down.
The Lie
The actual crime — Kang said plainly that helping Warbird could have been forgiven. Lying about it could not. The only son who passed every test failed the very last one: honesty.
