Today's Fact

Cain Marko lost the Crimson Gem, so he went to a forge in North Korea — and walked out wearing a binding spell as a suit of armor.

THE JUGGERNAUT'S NEW ARMOR IS DOCTOR STRANGE'S FAVOURITE SPELL — CRIMSON BANDS FORGED INTO A SUIT THAT CHOSE CAIN OVER ITS OWN MAKER!
The Featured Fact

Cain Marko's old power source did not survive the Krakoa era's opening skirmishes: Magik crushed the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak in Uncanny X-Men Vol. 5 #21 (2019), and a Limbo-trapped Cain had to barter away his original armor just to escape. The most unstoppable man alive started the new decade powerless.

His road back ran through the Forge of Cyttorak in the mountains of North Korea, revealed in Juggernaut Vol. 3 #3 (2020). A blacksmith disciple of Cyttorak had spent decades gathering mystical artifacts to drag the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak — the binding spell Doctor Strange normally summons for a few seconds at a time — into permanent physical form, expecting the god to reward him by making him the next Juggernaut. Instead, when the chains broke, the bands crashed down onto Cain and wrapped themselves around him as living armor.

That change of supplier changed the contract. Cain's power now flows from the bands themselves, armor he can summon around his body at will, rather than from ongoing service to Cyttorak — and Marvel's own history of the god records that Cain went on to confront Cyttorak directly, absorb the crushed gem's remains, vow never to work for him again, and tell the dark god he was completely cut off from Earth.

Why It's Obscure

For sixty years the Crimson Bands were what other people used to stop the Juggernaut. Now they are the Juggernaut.

A spell, tailored
Strange's restraint, Marko's wardrobe — The Crimson Bands debuted as Doctor Strange's binding spell in Strange Tales #124, a year before Juggernaut existed; the forge simply made the restraint permanent and wearable.
The maker, rejected
Decades of work, wrong recipient — The forge's blacksmith built the bands to earn the Juggernaut mantle for himself and attacked Cain with a sledgehammer to keep it; the bands chose Cain anyway.
Summoned at will
Armor on call — The band-armor forms around Cain in seconds when he wants it, which also creates his newest weakness: caught without the armor worn, he is far more exposed than the old always-on Juggernaut.
Cut off
Power without a boss — Drawing strength from the bands instead of the gem let Cain sever Cyttorak's access to Earth entirely, keeping the power while firing the god.
