Today's Fact
For years she swore it never happened, a court entered comic books as evidence against her, and she turned out to be right all along.
In Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #435 (2004), Cain Marko sat in a Canadian prison awaiting trial, and his defense attorney was Jennifer Walters. Cain's speech about how nobody — opponents least of all — ever bothered learning what he actually thought intrigued her, and the issue ended with She-Hulk and the Juggernaut in bed together, a hookup readers loathed on sight.
Jennifer spent years denying it. Doc Samson raised it in therapy in She-Hulk; Wolverine needled her about it; she denied it every time. Then, testifying at the Leader's trial in She-Hulk #19, she was confronted in open court with legally admissible comic books documenting the encounter — the Marvel Universe entering its own published issues as evidence against its own hero.
The resolution is one of the strangest retcons Marvel ever printed. The woman in Cain's bed had been a She-Hulk from Earth-721 — a world with almost no superhumans — who had come to Earth-616 on an interdimensional holiday, been molecularly realigned to match the local Jennifer Walters, and spent months secretly living her double's life, court cases, crime-fighting and one infamous night included. Earth-616's She-Hulk confronted her tourist twin, got a cheerful confession, and cleared her name. The Juggernaut, for his part, had never known there were two of her.
Why It's Obscure
Most retcons quietly rewrite a panel. This one put the panel on trial, in a courtroom, with exhibits.
