Today's Fact
Verified against independent sources. Issues cited below.
Jubilation Lee began life with every advantage Beverly Hills could offer: prosperous immigrant parents, an exclusive school, and gymnastics coaches who talked about the Olympics. Then, in a single weekend, her parents lost their money in the stock market — and two hitmen came to the door looking for a different family also named Lee.
The killers' mistake was total and irreversible. Jubilee was out with a friend of the family when her parents were murdered, and the orphaned teenager was shipped to an institution she promptly ran away from. Her refuge was the Hollywood mall she already knew by heart, where she stole food, slept rough and learned to survive alone.
The mall is also where her powers announced themselves. Cornered by security, the frightened runaway produced her first blinding blast of plasma fireworks, then turned the light shows into busking money — until mall security hired mutant hunters, and four visiting shoppers in matching uniforms changed the direction of her life for good.
Why It's Obscure
Behind the mall-rat introduction sits a case of mistaken identity so cruel it reads like a printing error in somebody else's tragedy.
