BASTION PROBED JUBILEE'S MIND FOR THE X-MEN'S SECRETS — AND SHE FREED THE CAPTURED X-MEN FROM INSIDE HIS OWN BASE!
The Featured Fact

Fleeing Black Tom Cassidy's attack on her Generation X classmates, Jubilee ran straight into the one man hunting every mutant in America: Bastion, architect of Operation: Zero Tolerance. He hauled the teenager to a decommissioned Hulkbuster base in New Mexico and wired her into a machine that projected her thoughts and memories onto a monitor whenever he steered her mind toward the X-Men.

Bastion's favourite trick was theatre. He fed his prisoner staged illusions of captured, broken X-Men — until one scene showed Wolverine pleading for mercy, and the performance collapsed. Jubilee knew Logan better than almost anyone alive, and Logan does not beg. Recognising the lie handed her the resolve to wall her mind off against the probes for good.

The genuine article arrived soon after: a real team of X-Men really was captured and brought to that same base. While Bastion gloated to his defiant prisoner, Jubilee reached a control panel and released her teammates from captivity. The X-Men escaped through the confusion never realising their youngest ally was locked up in the building — or that she had just sprung them. Earlier in her captivity she had even burned her one clean escape window stopping to help a guard her own panicked power flare had badly hurt.

Why It's Obscure

A Sentinel mastermind, a rigged interrogation, and a prisoner who picked the lock from the wrong side of the door.

1997
The snatch — Generation X #25–27: Black Tom's ambush scatters the students, and Bastion collects the one who runs his way.
Probes
The machine — every interrogation doubled as a download, with Jubilee's own memories screened back at her while Bastion fished for headquarters and defences.
The tell
One actor too many — a counterfeit Wolverine begging for his life was a line Logan would never deliver, and spotting it rebuilt Jubilee's mental defences on the spot.
Daria
The defector inside — Bastion's assistant Daria watched the sessions and stopped seeing a dangerous mutant, seeing instead a frightened kid being taken apart.
Release
The jailbreak — one pressed panel during Bastion's victory lap emptied the X-Men's cells, and the escapees left without ever learning who had opened them.
