Jubilee calls them fireworks. Emma Frost called them something else. While training in Generation X, Jubilee was assessed by Emma as having the untapped potential to detonate matter at a sub-atomic level — in theory, the equivalent of a fusion bomb. Emma rated her one of the most powerful mutants she had ever encountered.
The assessment traces to the Phalanx Covenant era (X-Men Vol 2 #36, 1994), when Jubilee confessed her fear of killing someone if her powers ever truly flared — as they had during Acts of Vengeance, when a panicked blast destroyed an entire house. She has been deliberately holding back ever since: the sparkles are a choice, not a ceiling.
Decades later she finally proved Emma right. In X-Terminators #5 (2023), dropped aboard the Collector's ship in space, Jubilee cut loose with a sub-atomic blast that obliterated the vessel, burned off her hair and clothes, and was bright enough to be seen from Earth. Magik fished her out. The firecracker was a bomb all along.
Why It's Obscure
Jubilee's fireworks get written off as the mall rat's party trick — pretty sparks, no payload. Emma Frost read the same power very differently: detonate matter at the sub-atomic level, with no ceiling she could find.
