A TEENAGE MALL RAT PULLED WOLVERINE OFF A CRUCIFIX — AND SAVED HIS LIFE!
The Featured Fact

In Uncanny X-Men #251 (November 1989), the cyborg Reavers capture Wolverine in the X-Men’s abandoned Outback ghost town and nail him to a giant wooden X to die in the storm. The team is gone — scattered through the Siege Perilous. The only other soul in town is Jubilee: a runaway teenage mall rat who secretly followed the X-Men through Gateway’s portal weeks earlier and has been living in the walls of the base, stealing food and dodging everyone.

Jubilee watches the crucifixion from hiding, terrified. When Wolverine tears himself free in a berserker surge and collapses, he looks straight at her hiding place — he has known she was there all along — and calmly asks if she’ll give him a hand. The teenager drags the most dangerous mutant alive underground, hides him from Donald Pierce’s cyborgs, and nurses him back from the brink.

In Uncanny X-Men #252, the Reavers hunt the pair through the base. Jubilee blasts Pierce, collapses a tunnel on him, and escapes into the desert at Logan’s side — choosing the X-Men’s life on the spot. It is the start of the Wolverine-and-Jubilee partnership that would define both characters for a decade and anchor X-Men: The Animated Series. Before that night, she had never even spoken to an X-Man.

Why It's Obscure

Before she was Wolverine's sidekick, she was his rescue party of one.

Uncanny X-Men #251, “Fever Dream” — Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri: the Reavers crucify Wolverine on a wooden X outside the base; a storm drives them inside, and Jubilee creeps out to help.
1989
Uncanny X-Men #252, “Where’s Wolverine?!” — Pierce finds the X empty. Jubilee keeps Logan hidden, fights the Reavers with her plasmoid bursts, and floods the tunnels to cover their escape.
Trivia
Continuity trackers note #251 is the first time Jubilee directly interacts with any X-Man at all — her entire relationship with the team starts with her saving its most unkillable member.
