Today's Fact
One mistaken shade of red outside Avengers Mansion ended Jewel's career, put Jessica in another coma, and quietly armed her for a rematch years later.
After eight months held under the mind control of Zebediah Killgrave, the Purple Man, Jessica — then the hero Jewel — was given a final order in a fit of his rage at Daredevil: fly to Avengers Mansion and kill the blind hero. The further she flew from Killgrave, the weaker his pheromone grip became, but she arrived still dazed and locked onto her instructions.
Daredevil was not the first red figure she found. The Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff, was wearing red, so Jewel punched her instead. The returning Avengers beat Jessica severely before Carol Danvers — the only one of them who actually knew her — could call them off, and Jessica slipped into another coma and was moved into S.H.I.E.L.D. care.
The rescue planted a time bomb in Killgrave's favour-turned-failure. Jean Grey woke Jessica with telepathy and implanted a psychic defence trigger in her mind. Years later, when Killgrave ordered Jessica to kill a hero of her choice in front of the Avengers, the trigger fired — and Jessica used the opening to beat Killgrave himself senseless, as retold in Alias Vol. 1 #28 (2004).
Why It's Obscure
A case of mistaken identity did more damage to Jessica Jones than most supervillains ever managed — and also quietly saved her.
