Today's Fact

Between the costume she is known for and the trench coat she is known for now, Jessica Jones field-tested a third identity — darker, masked, and gone within the week.

JESSICA JONES WAS KNIGHTRESS FOR ABOUT A WEEK — THEN SHE TOOK HER MASK OFF FOR TWO STRANGERS' KIDS!
The Featured Fact

After the Purple Man shattered her life as the bright-costumed hero Jewel, Jessica Jones was not finished with masks — she was finished with optimism. As recounted in the flashback chapters of Alias, she rebuilt herself as Knightress: a hardened vigilante in a black costume with a red mask and trim, working the streets at night with none of Jewel's sparkle and a great deal more bitterness.

The Knightress era lasted roughly a week. Its defining night was an interception of a crime meeting between the villain the Owl and a mafioso — the same night Jessica first crossed paths with Luke Cage, who was working the case from the other side. The fight went fine. The aftermath did not fit the vigilante script at all: one of the arrested thugs had brought his children along, and they were suddenly alone at a crime scene.

So Knightress ended the way no grim vigilante is supposed to end anything: Jessica removed her mask in front of the police and gave them her real name, purely so she would be allowed to stay with the frightened kids and look after them for the night. The gesture burned the identity on the spot — a masked vigilante with a public name is just a person — and within days Jessica Jones had left costumes behind for good and opened Alias Investigations.

Why It's Obscure

Knightress is the missing middle chapter of Jessica Jones: one week, one busted mob meeting, one future husband met, and a career ended by an act of babysitting.

About a week
The shortest résumé line she owns — Jewel lasted years and Alias Investigations lasted decades, but Knightress burned through her entire career in days, making her one of the briefest costumed identities any Avenger has ever held.
Black and red
A costume as a mood swing — Knightress swapped Jewel's white-and-pink brightness for black with red accents and a mask: the same powers, redecorated by trauma into something meant to frighten people.
First meeting
Luke Cage enters mid-bust — Jessica met the man she would eventually marry while both of them were independently wrecking the Owl's meeting; their first conversation happened in the wreckage of a vigilante operation.
Unmasked on purpose
Secrecy traded for two kids — Most heroes unmask under duress or in triumph. Jessica did it voluntarily, in front of uniformed police, as paperwork — the price of being allowed to comfort children nobody else was looking after.
