JEFF THE LAND SHARK

Today's Fact

Before the costumes, the team-ups and the snack theft, Jeff was inventory: one unit in a genetically engineered shark army pointed at Santa Monica.

JEFF WAS BUILT TO BE A WEAPON — M.O.D.O.K. ENGINEERED HIM AS ONE OF AN ARMY OF LAND SHARKS!
The Featured Fact

Jeff's species is not natural and was never meant to be cute. The land sharks were genetically engineered by M.O.D.O.K. — in this era answering to B.R.O.D.O.K., a henchman-turned-would-be heartthrob phase of the villain — as living weapons: sharks rebuilt with four sturdy legs and lungs fit for open air, so an apex predator could keep hunting after it left the water. The brood debuted as an invading force in West Coast Avengers Vol. 3 #1 (2018).

The army's big campaign was an assault on Santa Monica, where Clint Barton and Kate Bishop's newly assembled West Coast Avengers beat the scheme back. When the fight ended, the surviving land sharks mostly did what sharks do and returned to the ocean. One small straggler did not get the memo — or got it and declined — and was found by team member Gwenpool, who adopted him on the spot in West Coast Avengers Vol. 3 #7 (2019).

That straggler was Jeff, which makes his entire heroic career an act of defection. Every land shark was manufactured to serve a supervillain's grudge against a city that had rejected him; Jeff is simply the one who was scooped up by a hero before anyone could issue him orders, and he has been freeloading with the Avengers' extended family ever since.

Why It's Obscure

Marvel's most beloved pet began as ordnance. The difference between Jeff and a doomsday weapon is one adoption and a total lack of supervision since.

B.R.O.D.O.K.
A villain in his romance era — The M.O.D.O.K. variant behind the land sharks had reinvented himself as B.R.O.D.O.K., Bio-Robotic Organism Designed Overwhelmingly for Kissing; rejection helped turn the makeover into a monster-making spree.
Santa Monica
An invasion, not an origin story — The land sharks arrived as an attacking horde in West Coast Avengers Vol. 3 #1, months before any single shark had a name, a home or a fan club.
Four legs, on purpose
Engineering specs: nightmare — Legs and land-breathing were deliberate design choices, giving a shark's bite and temper a delivery system that sidewalks and boardwalks could not stop.
Vol. 3 #7 · 2019
The one who stayed — While the rest of the brood scattered back to the sea after the defeat, Jeff remained on land and with people — the founding decision of his whole biography, made entirely by accident.
