JEFF THE LAND SHARK

Today's Fact

A scene-stealer who began as one anxious face in a crowd scene, told from the creators' own accounts.

JEFF WAS NEVER PLANNED — HE WAS A WORRIED BACKGROUND SHARK WHO STOLE THE WHOLE BOOK!
The Featured Fact

The land sharks who rampaged through Santa Monica in West Coast Avengers Vol. 3 #1 (2018) were meant to be disposable: a herd of four-legged sharks genetically engineered by B.R.O.D.O.K. — M.O.D.O.K. in a temporarily handsome body — and designed to be fought once and forgotten.

Writer Kelly Thompson could not forget one of them. Studying Stefano Caselli's pages, she kept returning to a single small shark in the background of the herd, drawn with an expression she described as deeply concerned — an animal that plainly did not want to be part of the attack at all.

Thompson folded that worried face together with the behaviour of her own pet cats, The Monarch and Clive, and the mixture became a character. Artist Daniele Di Nicuolo drew the result for Jeff's first official appearance in West Coast Avengers Vol. 3 #7 (2019), where Gwenpool adopted him on the spot.

Why It's Obscure

Most breakout characters arrive with a pitch meeting behind them; this one arrived with a worried expression and two house cats.

The one-off herd
Built to be beaten — Caselli's land sharks existed to give the West Coast Avengers something strange to punch in their opening arc, with no solo future pencilled in for any single animal.
The expression
Concerned, in capital letters — Thompson has said the background shark looked so unhappy about the invasion that she could not stop thinking about him between issues.
The cats
Monarch and Clive did the acting — Jeff's pushy, affectionate, food-obsessed personality was modelled on Thompson's own two cats rather than on anything a real shark has ever done.
The redesign
Rounder every year — early Jeff was leaner, longer and sometimes drew side flippers; later artists, Kevin Libranda among them, settled the compact four-legged shape Gurihiru made definitive in It's Jeff!
