Today's Fact
Before the firebird went cosmic, there was a coronation in a corset, staged inside Jean's own mind.
The Hellfire Club wanted Jean Grey's Phoenix power on its side of the board, so Mastermind — calling himself Jason Wyngarde and auditioning for the Inner Circle — spent months slipping illusions into her thoughts across Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #129–138 (1980). Aided by a mind-tap device built by the White Queen, Emma Frost, he convinced Jean she was reliving the life of an ancestor, Lady Grey, the Club's eighteenth-century Black Queen and his ancestor's lover.
The fantasy eventually swallowed the present whole. Presented to the Inner Circle in the Black Queen's corset, cape and choker, Jean accepted the title as her real identity, revelled in the cruelty the role licensed, and stood with the Club while it ambushed and captured her own teammates.
Mastermind's grip snapped in the cruelest possible way: a psychic duel in which he appeared to kill Cyclops inside Jean's mindscape. The shock tore away the last of Xavier's psychic circuit-breakers, Jean punished Mastermind by forcing godhood into his mind, and the woman who walked out of the Hellfire Club was no longer answering to Queen at all — she had renamed herself Dark Phoenix.
Why It's Obscure
Summaries rush from Phoenix to Dark Phoenix. The Black Queen chapter in between is where the corruption actually happened.
