JEAN GREY'S NEW YORK ROOMMATE WAS MISTY KNIGHT — THE BIONIC-ARMED PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR!
The Featured Fact

The most dangerous lease in Manhattan paired a telekinetic with a detective. During her time living in New York, Jean Grey shared an apartment with Misty Knight, the former police officer turned private investigator of Nightwing Restorations — a living arrangement readers discovered in Uncanny X-Men #102 (1976), in the immediate aftermath of Jean's fiery plunge back to Earth and rebirth in flame.

Misty noticed the change before the X-Men understood it. Sharing a kitchen with the newly blazing Jean, the investigator sensed that something about her roommate had gone fundamentally strange, and she kept worrying at that wrongness while cosmic trouble kept walking through their front door — Jean's parents and Professor Xavier came to lunch at the apartment, only for the meal to be interrupted by the herald Firelord.

The pairing was no accident of casting. Chris Claremont was writing both the X-Men and Iron Fist books and used the shared address to stitch his two casts together, which is how a street-level detective ended up hosting alien royalty, sensing the Phoenix before almost anyone else, and later standing beside the X-Men in battle against Moses Magnum.

Why It's Obscure

One roommate carried cosmic fire home from orbit; the other carried a bionic arm and a detective's instincts about it.

1976
X-Men #102 — the roommate arrangement surfaces in December 1976, hot on the heels of Jean's fateful fall from the sky and the first stirrings of the Phoenix.
The roommate
Misty Knight, in brief — ex-NYPD, possessor of a bionic arm, and co-founder of a private investigation firm; the gallery carries her portrait as today's named guest.
Early warning
The detective smelled smoke — later stories returned to Misty's unease, showing her brooding over the gloom gathering around Jean while the Phoenix mystery was still invisible to everyone else.
Shared writer
One pen, two books — Claremont juggled X-Men and Iron Fist at the same time and loved crossovers that widened the Marvel Universe; the apartment was his bridge between them.
