BEFORE THE X-MEN EVER MET, A YOUNG JEAN GREY REACHED CYCLOPS AS A PHOENIX — AND XAVIER MADE THEM BOTH FORGET!
The Featured Fact

Long before there was a school roll call, Charles Xavier was quietly tutoring a traumatised schoolgirl at her parents' home, holding her telepathy behind mental walls while her telekinesis took shape. During one of those private sessions, Jean's mind drifted onto the astral plane and found a stranger: a boy she had never seen, alone and hurting. Part of her psyche answered by taking the shape of a vast bird made of living flame — a Phoenix raptor — which spread its wings over the boy and eased his pain. The encounter stayed hidden from readers until Classic X-Men #42 (1990) retold those training years.

The boy on the other end of that fiery visit was Scott Summers, an orphan growing up in Nebraska while his own uncontrollable gift was beginning to stir. He had no name for the presence that comforted him, and no reason to connect it with any living person. Yet that brief contact laid the very first strand of the celebrated psychic rapport between Scott and Jean, years before either of them owned a costume.

Xavier, unsettled by how far his pupil's power had reached without her even trying, kept her telepathy suppressed, and the astral meeting faded from both children's conscious memories. So when Jean finally walked into the school in X-Men #1 (1963) and was introduced to Scott as though for the first time, neither teenager recognised the other. Their famous first meeting was, in secret, a reunion — arranged by a cosmic bird neither of them remembered meeting.

Why It's Obscure

The Phoenix is usually dated from a shuttle crash in 1976. Its first appearance in Jean Grey's life actually happened in her childhood, over a boy she had never met.

The lessons
School before the school — Xavier coached Jean privately for years while she still lived with her parents, which quietly makes her his earliest student of all.
A cry for help
The mind in pain — drifting on the astral plane, Jean picked up the loneliness of an unknown boy and moved toward it instinctively, with no training telling her to do any such thing.
The raptor
Fire takes a shape — the part of Jean that reached Scott did not arrive as a girl at all, but as a great flaming bird, the same silhouette that would one day announce the Phoenix to the whole universe.
The forgetting
Walled off twice — alarmed by the scale of what she had done, Xavier kept her mind-reading locked down, and the visit slipped out of both children's memories entirely.
1963
Strangers, again — X-Men #1 plays the Jean-and-Scott introduction as a beginning. Classic X-Men #42 quietly reveals it was their second hello.

The Forgotten First Time Jean Grey Connected to the Phoenix — ScreenRantRecounts Classic X-Men #42: during Xavier's early training, Jean sensed a young mutant in pain on the astral plane, manifested a Phoenix raptor as she reached out to the boy — Scott Summers — and forgot the encounter after Xavier suppressed her telepathy.
  2. Jean Grey's Origin Is More Tragic Than X-Men Fans Think — ScreenRantCorroborates the training years behind the fact: Xavier worked with Jean for years before founding the team and walled off her telepathy after her power flared beyond his expectations (Bizarre Adventures #27).
