Today's Fact

The arms dealer who quit the weapons business talked his way into running the Pentagon, mostly so nobody else could play with his patents.

TONY STARK TOOK A CABINET JOB — IRON MAN SERVED AS SECRETARY OF DEFENSE OF THE UNITED STATES!
The Featured Fact

In Iron Man Vol. 3 #73 (2003), opening John Jackson Miller's 'The Best Defense' arc, Tony Stark discovered that executive Sonny Burch had legally appropriated his old Iron Man patents for military production. Stark's countermove was audacious even by his standards: he demanded, and won, appointment as Secretary of Defense of the United States.

The logic was pure Stark. His contracts had protected the armor while an 'employee' wore it, but publicly unmasking as Iron Man had voided that shelter and let the government treat his technology as its own. From inside the cabinet, he could monitor every program built on his designs and steer them away from the misuse he had spent years trying to outrun.

The tenure ended in disgrace he did not earn. During the Avengers Disassembled crisis, a deranged Scarlet Witch manipulated Stark into a drunken, belligerent outburst before the United Nations ambassador of Latveria — a public meltdown that forced his resignation. He kept the distinction anyway: the only Avenger ever to sit in a presidential cabinet while still suiting up on weekends.

Why It's Obscure

Most defense secretaries review weapons programs; this one had personally built, worn, and been shot at in them.

#73
The condition — Stark offered Washington his expertise at one price: the top job, with confirmation hearings as the world's strangest armor test.
Sonny Burch
The loophole man — Burch's patent grab turned Stark technology into a government catalog, and the cabinet post was Tony's way of locking the catalog shut.
The unmasking tax
Fine print bites — Revealing himself as Iron Man had quietly voided the employee clause shielding his patents, a legal own-goal he fixed with a Senate vote.
The resignation
Sabotaged by a teammate — Scarlet Witch's hex made him appear drunk at the UN, and a secretary of defense cannot trend for the wrong reasons.
