Today's Fact

Long before Danny Rand, K'un-Lun staked its survival on a silent girl, a dragon, and a firebird falling out of the sky.

AN IRON FIST TAMED THE PHOENIX FORCE IN 1596 — THEN LEFT EARTH FOREVER, SAYING THE WORLD WASN'T READY!
The Featured Fact

Around 1596, Yu-Ti of K'un-Lun began dreaming of a red-haired, green-eyed girl mastering a flaming bird. He found that girl — Fongji Wu, a mute child of a K'un-Lun mother and a Western father — and ordered her trained as the next Iron Fist, a candidate chosen by prophecy rather than by tournament.

Her preparation, aided by Leonardo da Vinci of the Brotherhood of the Shield, stalled until rage cracked it open and a firebird aura burst out of her during training. Sent at last to face Shou-Lao the Undying, Fongji emerged two days later carrying the dragon's power — and speaking for the first time, to give thanks.

When the Phoenix Force arrived, Fongji met it with an Iron Fist's discipline and did what hosts so rarely manage: she stayed herself, in complete control of the cosmic entity. Granted cosmic awareness, she judged the planet unready, flew into the stars, and was never seen again. Her story was sealed away in the Book of the Fallen, surfacing for Danny Rand only when the Phoenix returned in New Avengers Vol. 2 #25–27 (2012).

Why It's Obscure

A chapter of the Iron Fist line filed away with the dead, opened again only when the firebird came back.

1596
Fongji the Silent — The legends remember a girl who spoke to almost no one; she let a dragon trial and a cosmic force do the talking for her.
Da Vinci
An unlikely tutor — K'un-Lun called in Leonardo da Vinci, who watched her powers flare firsthand and built instruments to track the Phoenix's approach.
Two days
The long dragon test — Her Shou-Lao trial ran two full days before she walked out with the power, far longer than the quick bouts of most retellings.
2012
Why Danny learned it — The tale was read out during Avengers vs. X-Men because the Phoenix was returning, and K'un-Lun's one success story was the only manual anyone had.
