Today's Fact
Danny Rand's destiny was settled a generation early — by a predecessor who talked his father out of the job and then predicted the son who would take it.
Orson Randall, the Iron Fist who preceded Danny Rand, was rescued from poisoning in Nepal by a servant boy named Wendell Rand — Danny's father. Orson took the boy in, trained him in kung fu, and filled his head with two conflicting gifts: the skills to chase K'un-Lun, and years of warnings about how dangerous the Iron Fist's power truly was.
Wendell chased it anyway. He found K'un-Lun, trained under its masters, befriended the man who would become Davos, and fought his way to the ultimate honor: the right to face Shou-Lao the Undying and claim the Iron Fist. Then, at the threshold, Orson's warnings won. Wendell walked away from the dragon — the only contender to earn the trial and refuse it out of doubt rather than defeat.
When Wendell later found his old mentor again, Orson delivered the verdict that shaped two generations: he had known from the beginning that Wendell would never become the Iron Fist — but that Wendell's son would. Danny Rand's entire destiny, down to the orphaned boy arriving in K'un-Lun years later, was a prophecy his father heard before Danny was ever born. Marvel laid out the lineage when Orson debuted in The Immortal Iron Fist #1 (2006).
Why It's Obscure
The Iron Fist Danny inherited was first refused by his father, at the urging of the man who held it before them both.
