Today's Fact

While Matt Murdock sat in a Ryker's Island cell, Hell's Kitchen kept seeing Daredevil on its rooftops — and the man inside the suit was a billionaire monk.

THE DAREDEVIL OF CIVIL WAR WAS IRON FIST — DANNY RAND WORE THE HORNS WHILE MATT MURDOCK SAT IN PRISON!

The Featured Fact

When Matt Murdock was arrested and jailed at Ryker's Island after his identity was exposed, Danny Rand quietly took over the Daredevil mantle in Ed Brubaker's Daredevil run, beginning around Vol. 2 #82 (2006). A Daredevil swinging through Hell's Kitchen while Murdock sat in a cell was living reasonable doubt, manufactured nightly.

The disguise ran deeper than the suit. Naturally blond, Danny dyed his hair reddish-brown to match Murdock's, fought in the red costume through the superhuman Civil War, and even joined Captain America's unregistered Secret Avengers as 'Daredevil' — close enough that Tony Stark confronted the wrong man over a silver Judas coin.

The tell was the ankle. Deadpool, who had fought Iron Fist before, grabbed the fake Daredevil by the ankle mid-battle in Cable & Deadpool and recognized the fighting style — Captain America's shield knocked him out before he could say it aloud. When Murdock finally confronted his stand-in, Danny admitted the whole impersonation had been arranged to protect him, a favor Matt had never actually requested.

Why It's Obscure

One hero in prison, one hero in his costume, and a mercenary who solved the mystery by grabbing a foot.

Ryker's

An alibi with horns — Every rooftop sighting of Daredevil argued, without a word, that the man in the cell could not be him.

The dye job

Method acting, Marvel style — Danny changed his hair color for a role he performed exclusively at night, in a mask, for an audience of criminals.

Civil War

Registered as someone else — Danny fought a war over hero registration while wearing another hero's name, which is one way to dodge paperwork.

The ankle

Deadpool, detective — Wade Wilson identified the impostor by grip and muscle memory, then got shield-checked into silence.
