In Power Man and Iron Fist #125 (1986), the series ended with a funeral: Danny Rand, drained after spending his chi to keep the young hero Captain Hero alive, was beaten to death while unconscious, and Luke Cage took the blame. Readers mourned a genuine death — by the standards of the day, it was meant to stay one.
Years later, in the pages of Namor the Sub-Mariner, John Byrne unpicked the grave. The Danny who died was a doppelganger grown by the H'ylthri, the plant people of K'un-Lun, who had kidnapped the real Rand after a journey home and swapped the copy into his life — a double so complete that it honestly believed it was Danny Rand.
The original, meanwhile, lay in stasis in K'un-Lun, spending his captivity productively: focusing his chi inward, he cured the radiation poisoning that had been killing him. When Misty Knight and Colleen Wing followed the trail — a buried body decomposing into plant matter — Namor helped them free the living Iron Fist.
Why It's Obscure
Marvel's most botanical retcon: the hero in the coffin was grown, not born.
