Today's Fact
Hiding from Sue Storm is a losing bet — the same accident that lets her vanish rewired how her eyes gather the world.
Ordinary eyes work by catching reflected light, but the cosmic rays that bombarded the Fantastic Four's rocket changed Susan Storm Richards' retinas. Her eyes also register shapes from reflected cosmic rays, particles that hang in the atmosphere in minute amounts everywhere — so a person standing invisible in front of her still has an outline.
Because that signal bypasses her rods and cones, the extra layer of sight arrives without color — hidden things register for Sue in monochrome shades. The arrangement runs in reverse, too: her energy projection can interfere with invisibility produced by other means and pull a concealed person or object back into plain view.
She put the detection side to famous use in Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #415 (1996), projecting weak force fields outward like radar pulses to locate the concealed Onslaught. Against the Invisible Woman, concealment is only ever a delay.
Why It's Obscure
Everyone studies how she disappears; almost nobody asks how she watches the rest of the room disappear.
