Today's Fact

Marvel waited five years to tell Bobby Drake's origin story — and it opens with a date, a bully, and a cell door closing.

ICEMAN'S FIRST ACT AS A MUTANT LANDED HIM IN JAIL — AND PROFESSOR X ERASED AN ENTIRE TOWN TO SPRING HIM!
The Featured Fact

In Fort Washington, Long Island, teenager Bobby Drake was walking his girlfriend Judy Harmon home from the movies when local bully Rocky Beasely and his gang moved in on her. Panicking, Bobby did the one thing he had sworn to keep hidden: he froze Beasely solid where he stood. The blast saved Judy — and by the next morning, the whole town knew a mutant lived on the block.

The sheriff took Bobby into custody for his own protection, and Bobby — certain he would get a fair trial — refused to run. Word of the "mutant boy" reached Professor Charles Xavier, who sent his first student, Cyclops, to recruit him. Cyclops blasted straight through the jail wall; Bobby, furious at the presumption, froze him out and fought him across town — straight into the arms of a lynch mob that caught both boys and started stringing up ropes.

Xavier arrived in person and ended it the only way his school could survive: he reached into the minds of the entire town and erased every memory of Bobby Drake's powers — townsfolk, sheriff, and, for a time, even Bobby's own parents. Bobby left Fort Washington as the second X-Man, codename Iceman, while back home nobody could explain the hole in the jail wall.

Why It's Obscure

A five-year wait, a three-issue backup feature, and a recruitment conducted at rope's length.

The wait
Readers waited five years for this story — Bobby debuted in X-Men Vol. 1 #1 (1963), but his origin ran as backup features in X-Men #44–46 (1968), tucked behind other heroes' adventures.
The byline
Gary Friedrich wrote it, George Tuska drew it — the "Origins of the X-Men" backups, opening with "The Iceman Cometh!", finally gave the founding members the childhoods 1963 had skipped.
The snowman
His first covering was snow, not ice — mid-fight with Cyclops, Bobby coated himself in snow for the first time, the bulky snowman look early X-Men readers knew: black belt, yellow boots, nothing like the sleek ice form he wears today.
The cover-up
Even his parents forgot — Xavier's wipe took William and Madeline Drake's knowledge of their son's powers too, and those memories stayed buried for years before surfacing again.
