Today's Fact
Marvel's first antihero came back to comics because a teenage Torch got curious about a bearded stranger.
In Fantastic Four #4 (May 1962), Johnny Storm ducked into a flophouse in New York's Bowery and found a hulking, bearded homeless man with no memory of who he was. Something about the stranger nagged at Johnny — so he used his flame to carefully burn away the man's enormous beard, revealing the unmistakable face of Namor the Sub-Mariner.
Johnny flew the still-dazed Namor out over the harbor and dropped him into the sea. The water restored what the years had buried: memory, strength and fury. Namor surfaced remembering Atlantis, his people and his grievances against the surface world, and his war on New York began almost immediately.
The issue, by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, was the Silver Age return of one of Marvel's original 1939 heroes. In story terms, the Fantastic Four's youngest member personally reintroduced the Sub-Mariner to the modern Marvel Universe — and handed his own team its first great crisis.
Why It's Obscure
