Today's Fact

The Fantastic Four never hid who they were — which makes the year Johnny Storm spent guarding a secret nobody was keeping genuinely baffling.

JOHNNY STORM KEPT A SECRET IDENTITY IN GLENVILLE — AND THE WHOLE TOWN KNEW, AND POLITELY PLAYED ALONG!
The Featured Fact

When Johnny Storm headlined Strange Tales #101 (1962), the solo stories moved him to Glenville, Long Island — and abruptly handed him a secret identity. Johnny attended high school as an ordinary teenager, slipped away to flame on in private, and fretted constantly that his classmates might connect the local kid to the famous Human Torch living in their town.

The premise had one obvious problem: the Fantastic Four were public figures. Johnny's sister Sue Storm was openly known as the Invisible Girl, Johnny had never worn a mask, and he had already bragged to his schoolmates that he was the Torch — they simply had not believed him. Later continuity settled it plainly: the 'secret' was a pretense Johnny maintained largely to protect his own pride.

The punchline landed in Strange Tales #106 (1962). Johnny learned that everyone in Glenville had known he was the Human Torch all along — the entire town had been humoring him, assuming he wanted the charade left alone. The revelation arrived via Carl Zante, the Acrobat, who exploited Johnny's ego to recruit him into the short-lived Torrid Twosome and trick him into burning open a bank vault.
