Today's Fact
Shrunken past the size of an atom, the strongest one there is found a kingdom that wanted him gentle.
In Incredible Hulk #140 (June 1971), in the classic story written by Harlan Ellison and Roy Thomas, the Hulk was shrunk down into a subatomic world called K'ai. There, instead of being hunted, he was welcomed: the green-skinned people of K'ai saw a champion, and their queen, Jarella, saw something more.
On K'ai, a spell cast by Jarella's sorcerers let Banner's mind guide the Hulk's body, and for one of the only times in his life the Hulk ruled peacefully as king beside a queen who loved him. The idyll ended when he was wrenched back to full size on Earth, torn away from the world that had accepted him.
Jarella later reached Earth herself and died there saving a child from a falling building in Incredible Hulk #205 (1976). Her death remains one of the most quietly devastating losses in the Hulk's history, and the Hulk carried her memory for decades of stories afterward.
Why It's Obscure
Planet Hulk gets the fame, but the Hulk was a beloved monarch on K'ai thirty-five years earlier.
