Today's Fact
Apocalypse usually recruits mutants, yet in Egypt he broke his own rule for a gamma-powered mortal carrying shrapnel in his brain.
In The Incredible Hulk Vol. 1 #456 (1997), written by Peter David, the eternal mutant Apocalypse captured the Hulk in Egypt and offered him a bargain no hero should accept: surrender to Celestial technology and become War, one of the Four Horsemen. The Hulk submitted, becoming — as Apocalypse himself noted — the first non-mutant ever granted a Horseman's mantle.
The transformation was surgical as much as mystical. Celestial machinery burned shrapnel out of the Hulk's brain, sealed a black helmet over his head to silence the taunting voice of his dead father, fused black-and-gold armor to his skin, and placed an energized Celestial sword in his hand alongside a gauntlet that unspooled a living tendril.
War's first outing rewrote a Marvel law. He hoisted an entire pyramid and dropped it toward Rick Jones's party, shattered the Absorbing Man when the villain grabbed his sword, and then did the impossible in issue #457: he stopped a charging Juggernaut dead and hurled him into Cairo. Only the returning voice of Brian Banner cracked the helmet's calm — the Hulk tore the armor off himself and leapt away, ending the shortest Horseman career on record.
Why It's Obscure
Two issues, one pyramid, and the unstoppable got stopped — a Horseman career measured in days.
