THE HULK CAN SEE GHOSTS — AND CAN EVEN GRAB DOCTOR STRANGE'S ASTRAL FORM!
The Featured Fact

Strength is the famous part of the Hulk's equipment, but tucked into his gamma-changed senses sits an ability no amount of muscle explains: he can perceive spirits and astral forms that are invisible to everyone else in the room. When Doctor Strange projects his astral self, ordinary people see empty air — the Hulk sees the sorcerer, hears him, and takes offense at him in person.

In The Incredible Hulk #370 (1990), that perception goes past seeing. With Strange present only as a floating astral form during the fight against the other-dimensional sorcerer Shanzar, the Hulk reaches out and physically seizes hold of the ghost — gripping a thing that has no body to grip, to the astonishment of the one man in Marvel who works with such forms professionally.

Writers have since tied the gift to the darkest room in Bruce Banner's childhood: a boy raised by the violent Brian Banner grew into a man half-expecting his father's hatred to follow him past the grave, and the Hulk — the part built to watch for threats — learned to watch for that one in particular. The strongest one there is doubles, quietly, as his own ghost detector.

Why It's Obscure

Everybody checks the Hulk for radiation and rubble damage. Nobody thinks to check him for hauntings — yet the dead have been visible to him for decades.

Astral vision
Seeing the unseeable — astral projection is supposed to pass unnoticed by the physical world, but the Hulk registers Doctor Strange's wandering spirit as plainly as a man in the room.
The grab
Hands on a ghost — in Incredible Hulk #370 the perception becomes contact: the Hulk closes his fingers around Strange's astral form and holds it.
A Defender's perk
Useful in that company — alongside Strange in the Defenders, a teammate who can see the sorcerer's astral self made the Hulk an unlikely bridge between the mystical and the physical.
Brian Banner
A childhood explanation — later stories suggest the sense grew from young Bruce's dread that his abusive father's spirit would one day come back for him.
1990
Horror in the resume — long before horror became the Hulk's modern branding, the ghost-sight was already there, waiting in the back of his power set.
