Today's Fact

The most disciplined killer in the Marvel Universe botched his very first contract in Tokyo — and the mistake rewired his whole code.

HIT-MONKEY'S FIRST HIT KILLED THE WRONG MAN — AND HE THREW HIS GUNS AWAY CRYING!
The Featured Fact

Guided by the ghost of the nameless assassin whose death he was avenging, the macaque reached Tokyo with one name on his list: Hideki Hiyashi, a politician who had helped General Kato order the slaughter of his troop. In Hit-Monkey Vol. 2 #1 (2010), the novice killer opened fire on Hiyashi — and hit the man's innocent assistant instead.

The reaction separated him from every professional on his list. Anguished at taking a life that was not on it, Hit-Monkey threw away his guns, fled the scene in tears, and had to be talked back into his own revenge by the dead mentor scolding him from beyond the grave.

That botched first shot became the foundation of the legend that followed. The assassin who wept over one bystander grew into the urban myth other killers whisper about: a monkey who hunts only killers, whose later war on Kato's organisation — guarded by Bullseye himself — was fought under a code written by his earliest failure.

Why It's Obscure

Most assassins remember their first kill with pride; his is the reason he only ever aims at people like himself.

Tokyo
Target number one — Hideki Hiyashi was the first name on the revenge list, a politician in General Kato's chain of command.
The miss
One bullet, wrong body — The assistant's death was accidental, and every retelling of the origin pauses on the monkey's horror at it.
Guns down
A killer quits, briefly — He abandoned his weapons and the mission on the spot; only his mentor's ghost argued him back.
The code
Killer of killers — The bystander's death is the origin of his rule: the list contains murderers, never bystanders.
