Today's Fact
A death goddess famous for never bargaining opened her very first story by giving a soul back.
Hela made her Marvel debut in Journey Into Mystery #102 (March 1964), arriving to claim the life of Sif, who lay near death after a battle. Thor refused to let the goddess take her and offered Hela a staggering trade instead: his own immortal soul in exchange for Sif walking away alive.
The Goddess of Death accepted the bargain and began dragging the Thunder God toward her realm — then stopped. Moved by the nobility of a god who would trade eternity for someone else, Hela released Thor from the deal entirely and departed with neither soul, an act of mercy almost unheard of from the ruler of Hel.
The moment set the template for Hela in the Silver Age: terrifying and absolute about the dead who belonged to her, yet capable of honoring courage when she saw it. Later writers would make her far colder, which makes this debut generosity easy to miss entirely.
Why It's Obscure
Her first appearance is usually remembered for the costume, not for the mercy that ends it.
