Today's Fact

Death herself crossed Asgard with a claim on a mutant who answered to no Norse god — and the newest Valkyrie in the Nine Realms stood in the doorway and said no.

HELA CAME FOR WOLVERINE'S SOUL — AND A TEENAGE VALKYRIE SENT HER HOME EMPTY!
The Featured Fact

During the Asgardian Wars, Loki's schemes scattered the X-Men and the New Mutants across the Nine Realms, and where mutants bled, collectors came calling. Hela appeared in Asgard with a formal demand: hand over what she required and she would leave in peace — what she required was the soul of Wolverine, a mortal with no business in her ledgers at all (X-Men Annual Vol. 1 #9, 1985).

Logan's defender was the least senior person on the field. Danielle Moonstar had only just been chosen by the Valkyrie steed Brightwind, but a Valkyrie's authority over the honored dead turned out to be a jurisdiction even the Goddess of Death had to argue with: Mirage used her brand-new status to hold Hela back while the X-Men closed ranks, and the queen of Hel withdrew with her claim uncollected and her pride itemized for later.

The overreach fit a pattern. Hela's charter covered Asgardian souls and their worshippers, heroes traditionally excepted for the Valkyries' Valhalla — yet she had already been caught harvesting mortal souls through Malekith's faerie food and would soon march on Odin's soul as well. Wolverine was simply the first mutant entry in an expansion campaign that the whole mutant generation kept refusing to honor.

Why It's Obscure

Thor argues with Hela over kingdoms; a schoolgirl from the New Mutants argued with her over one Canadian — and won the point.

1985
Asgardian Wars — the claim was staked while both mutant teams were stranded guests in a realm where Hela's paperwork usually went unchallenged.
The claim
Outside her charter — Wolverine worshipped no Norse god and owed Hel nothing; the demand was empire-building dressed as bookkeeping.
The shield
A Valkyrie of one day — Dani Moonstar's authority was hours old, borrowed from a flying horse's choice, and it was still enough to freeze Death mid-collection.
The ledger
A long memory for refusals — Hela's dealings with Moonstar ran for decades afterward, favors and prices alternating, all traceable to the day the teenager said no.
