HELA

Today's Fact

Death herself spent the Siege of Asgard as a tenant, renting somebody else's hell on a lease with a trickster's fine print.

HOMELESS HELA LEASED A SLICE OF MEPHISTO'S HELL FOR 1,001 YEARS — AND LOKI PAID IN ERASURE!
The Featured Fact

After Ragnarok, Hela had a title and no territory: awakened on Earth and camped in Las Vegas, she had no Hel to receive Asgard's dead. When Norman Osborn's Siege began piling up fallen gods, she openly planned to let their souls wander Midgard forever rather than improvise an afterlife, as told in Siege: Loki Vol. 1 #1 (2010).

Loki arrived with two bargaining chips: proof that the Disir — Bor's exiled, soul-eating Valkyries — were real and hunting, and a deal he had cut with Mephisto. A stretch of the demon's realm, from the Peninsula of Perfidy to the Gully of Hubris, would serve as Hela's new Hel for one thousand and one years.

The price was not paid in souls but in paperwork. In exchange for the territory, Hela struck Loki's name from the Book of Hel, cutting his last legal tie to Hel and Asgard and handing him a freedom even death could not repossess. She never learned that Loki had leased the Disir to Mephisto on a separate hundred-and-one-day contract — meaning her new kingdom's worst predators answered to her landlord.

Why It's Obscure

Every other death god owns real estate in eternity; Hela's afterlife came with a landlord, a lease and an expiry date.

Las Vegas
Death, stateside — Before the deal, the homeless goddess was operating out of Las Vegas, feeding on the souls of the unlucky.
The Disir
Thirteen hungry reasons — Loki subdued thirteen of Bor's cannibal Valkyries and used control of them as his currency with Mephisto.
1,001 years
The lease term — Hela's replacement Hel was rented, not granted: a millennium and a year inside another ruler's inferno.
Erased
Freedom by redaction — Loki's fee was removal from the Book of Hel, a destiny deleted rather than defeated.
