Today's Fact
Death's revenge on Thor was not to kill him. It was to make killing him impossible.
Hela keeps receipts. After Thor humiliated her in her own realm and the rampaging Kurse wrecked Hel on the Beyonder's errand, she answered in Thor Vol. 1 #374 (1986), in the middle of the Mutant Massacre: Thor's bones would be as brittle as an old woman's, breaks would never heal — and because she had cast him out of death's reach, he could not die of any of it.
The curse started collecting immediately. In the Morlock tunnels, Blockbuster's fall shattered Thor's arm; X-Factor's Cyclops and Marvel Girl splinted the break with wreckage while the thunder god rescued the wounded Angel around the Marauders' massacre — a rescue run by a hero whose skeleton had become glassware.
The damage shaped the rest of Walt Simonson's run. Thor grew a beard over his scarred face and fought in purpose-built armor meant to hold his body together, faced the Midgard Serpent in it, and only escaped the curse near the run's end, when his spirit — riding inside the Destroyer armor — compelled Hela to restore his body and lift her sentence.
Why It's Obscure
A curse famous among Thor readers hides inside an X-Men crossover issue, delivered in two pages at the back of a massacre.
