Today's Fact
Checked against independent sources — the issues are cited below.
Danielle Moonstar lost her mutant powers on M-Day, but her older bond with Asgard had once made her a Valkyrie, complete with the winged horse Brightwind. When a crisis demanded god-level strength against Ares, the depowered Dani did something desperate: she went to Hela and asked the Goddess of Death herself to give the Valkyrie gifts back.
Hela agreed, on the only terms she ever offers. Dani regained her Valkyrie powers — and a restored Brightwind — but the price was service: she became Hela's own Valkyrie, a chooser of the slain who would gather the dead for Hel rather than Valhalla, owing the queen a favor to be collected whenever Hela chose.
The debt shaped Dani's double life for years afterward, torn between the X-Men and Hel's claim on her, as retold when Dani joined the new Valkyrior in Fearless Defenders #2 (2013). Death, in Hela's bookkeeping, never gives a gift; she issues a loan and keeps the paperwork forever.
Why It's Obscure
A depowered mutant needed a goddess's strength for one fight, and death charged her by the year.
