Today's Fact

Clint's darkest mirror was not a stranger in his colors. It was his big brother, holding his teacher's name.

HAWKEYE'S OWN BROTHER BECAME HIS EVIL ARCHER DOUBLE — TRICKSHOT!
The Featured Fact

Charles Bernard Barton — Barney — entered Marvel history in Avengers #64 (1969) as a small-time criminal who warned the Avengers about Egghead's orbital death ray and apparently died saving them aboard the station. The dying scene carried a second payload: cradling his brother, the archer then called Goliath publicly revealed his own name as Clint Barton for the first time.

Barney had not stayed dead — Egghead had recovered and preserved his body — and decades later Baron Zemo cashed in the debt. Zemo bankrolled cancer treatment for the dying Buck Chisholm, the original Trick Shot and the carnival archer who had taught young Clint his craft, on one condition: Chisholm would train Barney to the same master level. The beaten, dying teacher was delivered to Avengers Tower as a calling card.

In Hawkeye: Blindspot #3 (2011) Barney claimed the respelled name Trickshot, ambushed his brother and hauled him before Zemo, who staged an archery duel to the death between them. Clint won it while his eyesight was failing toward blindness. The feud later thawed so far that Barney ended up helping Clint and Kate Bishop rescue kidnapped children from Hydra — family, in the Barton sense, meaning the grudges and the rescues run on the same account.

Why It's Obscure

One brother died a hero in 1969, then spent forty years in storage before returning as the villain of a four-issue miniseries.

1969
A debut and a funeral — Barney's first appearance kills him off in the same issue, which is one reason the surname reveal hid in plain sight for decades.
The teacher
One mentor, two Bartons — Buck Chisholm taught Clint at the carnival as a boy, then, dying and bought, taught Barney as a grown weapon.
2011
Note the spelling — Chisholm was Trick Shot, two words; Barney's version fuses it into Trickshot, a copy with the serial numbers filed down.
The duel
Blindspot's wager — Zemo pitted the brothers against each other at the exact moment Clint's vision was going, stacking the family reunion into a rigged contest.
