Today's Fact
Checked against independent sources — the issues are cited below.
Captured alongside Mockingbird by the villain Crossfire, Clint Barton faced a sonic device called the Undertaker, built to drive anyone who heard it into a murderous rage. His countermove was desperate and entirely his own design: he slipped the head of one of his sonic arrows into his mouth and let its frequency fight the machine for control of his mind.
The trick saved both heroes, and it cost the archer dearly. When the arrowhead went off, the blast ruptured his eardrums and left him roughly eighty percent deaf, a working Avenger suddenly dependent on hearing aids in both ears to follow a briefing, a battle, or a whispered warning.
He refused to treat the loss as a retirement notice. Barton kept shooting, married Mockingbird soon after Crossfire fell, and was soon dispatched west wearing those aids to found a new Avengers branch — proof that the man famous for his eyes had learned to fight with one sense permanently diminished.
Why It's Obscure
He beat a mind-control machine by putting its antidote in his mouth, and paid for the victory with his hearing.
