Today's Fact
New York was turning into hell one possessed taxi at a time, and the woman on the demon throne wanted a prince: not her husband, but his younger brother.
During Inferno, Madelyne Pryor — abandoned by Scott Summers and revealed as a clone of Jean Grey — bargained with the demons of Limbo and rose as the Goblin Queen. Alex Summers had stood by her when nobody else would, and her gratitude came with chains: riding beside her through a burning Manhattan, the wind shredded his uniform to ribbons, Madelyne admired how the tatters now matched her own regalia, claimed his loyalty, and christened him her Goblin Prince in Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #242 (1989).
The title came with duties. Atop the transformed Empire State Building, with Jean Grey chained on a sacrificial altar and an infant marked to seal Limbo's bridge to Earth, Madelyne gave her prince a single order — bring her his brother's heart — and Havok charged Cyclops with a plasma surge, fighting his own family for the woman Scott had thrown away (X-Factor Vol. 1 #38, 1989).
When the combined X-Men and X-Factor finally broke Madelyne's power, Alex's confession was colder than any apology: he thanked no one, admitted to Scott that he had tried to kill him, and judged that under the same circumstances he would probably do it again. The thrall explained the obedience; it never explained away how much of Alex's buried resentment the Goblin Prince had been happy to say out loud.
Why It's Obscure
Scott's marriage, Scott's son, Scott's abandoned clone — and somehow the brother who got handed the horns was Alex.
