Today's Fact

The Venom symbiote slipped its leash aboard the Guardians' ship, and the first body it stole belonged to the team's gentlest member.

GROOT BECAME VENOM — AND HIS THREE FAMOUS WORDS TURNED INTO A THREAT!
The Featured Fact

Agent Venom Flash Thompson was escorting the symbiote back toward its homeworld when it broke loose aboard the Guardians' ship — and its first host on the rampage was Groot. The black alien spread over bark and branch, stretched the Flora colossus into a fanged, taloned giant, and put a new sentence in his mouth: where Groot's whole vocabulary had always been one name, the symbiote's version announced itself over a cornered Rocket Raccoon with 'I am Venom!' The possession is laid out across Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 #21–22 (2014–2015), the opening movement of the Planet of the Symbiotes arc.

His teammates had to fight the thing wearing their friend without killing the friend inside it. Drax tore the symbiote off Groot by main force, but the creature simply moved house — into Rocket, guns and all, and then into Drax himself when he grabbed hold to pull it free. Groot was only the first stop on a tour of the entire crew.

The joke hiding inside the horror is linguistic: the symbiote could make Groot grow claws, wings of thorns and a second set of jaws, yet the most it could coax out of his restructured voice was a substitution — one pronoun phrase swapped for another, delivered at the top of his lungs.

Why It's Obscure

A possession story where the monster's scariest upgrade is vocabulary.

The first host
Groot went first — before Rocket's gun-rampage and Drax's turn, the symbiote tested itself on the biggest body on the ship.
The sentence
Two phrases, total — across every host and horror, Groot's species gives speech one shape; the symbiote kept the shape and changed only the name in it.
The relay
A host-to-host chase — Groot to Rocket to Drax in a single issue: freeing one Guardian only handed the problem to the next pair of hands.
The homeworld
Klyntar was the destination — the rampage happened because Flash was ferrying the symbiote home to the planet of its species, where its kind were meant to be benevolent.
