Today's Fact
In 2023 the Guardians spent months fleeing a calamity with a name like a weather warning — and the calamity was their oldest friend.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 7 #1 (2023) opens on a broken team evacuating frontier worlds ahead of something called Grootfall: a colossal root mass bearing Groot's face, crash-landing on planets, flattening everything on the surface, and absorbing the living into itself. Asked what happened to the Guardians, the answer given on the page is three words long — the survivors who failed to escape, we are told, are Groot now.
For half the series Grootfall reads as a possession or a corruption, and the truth held back until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 7 #7 (2023) is stranger and sadder. Groot had travelled with Rocket to the Branch Worlds and met Granopy, the first and last tree of his kind, who with her dying breath gave him her branch. The gift triggered the final stage of the Flora Colossi life cycle: Grootfall was Groot gathering the energy and raw material needed to properly take root, on a scale no single planet could host.
What grew from that rooting is called Grootspace — an interconnected web of planetary masses sharing one vast consciousness, dwarfing Ego the Living Planet, inside which the absorbed Guardians and countless others persist as part of Groot's awareness, awaiting eventual regrowth. The monster arc of 2023 was, in other words, a seeding: the most destructive year of Groot's life was his species' way of beginning again, with him as the forest entire worlds will grow inside.
Why It's Obscure
Every other Guardian crisis asked how to stop the threat; this one asked whether the threat was actually a birth announcement.
