Today's Fact

In Nick Fury's Howling Commandos #2 (2005), Groot was not invited to join anything — he was the quarry. The monster squad's Sasquatch and Abominable Snowman picked up his scent, and Clay Quartermain sent the team after him on sky-cycles, hammering the walking tree with high-range sonic weapons while he fought back.
The takedown came from a teammate Groot never saw coming: It, the Living Colossus, was already planted nearby and knocked him flat. A specialist Eraser Tech squad then used technology stolen from the Living Eraser to erase Groot out of the area entirely and deliver him to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s supernatural containment base, Area 13.
Capture was only step one of the pitch. In Nick Fury's Howling Commandos #4 (2005), Gorilla-Man visited Groot in Area 13's Creature Corral and laid out the deal given to every monster in the pens: work for the Commandos and earn walking-around privileges, or stay in isolated confinement. Groot listened, and privately reckoned Gorilla-Man was insane for spotting an upside.
Why It's Obscure
Years before the Guardians made him famous, a spy agency bagged him like contraband and tried to hire him out of a cage.
