GROOT WAS EXILED FROM PLANET X FOR RESCUING A HUMAN GIRL
The gentlest Guardian began his life in disgrace at home. On Planet X, his fellow Flora colossi routinely snatched living specimens from other worlds and hauled them back for study, and one of the captives delivered to the laboratories was a young human girl.
Groot stole her back. Breaking ranks with his own people's program, he freed the child and sent her home to Earth — a single act of mercy that his rulers treated as unforgivable disobedience.
The sentence was banishment. Cast off his homeworld while still young, Groot wandered the galaxy alone for decades, which is how a disgraced exile eventually washed up among outlaws and heroes instead of growing old among his own groves.
WHY IT'S OBSCURE
Later retellings swap the rescued girl for a brutalized maintenance mammal defended at fatal cost, yet every version of his youth arrives at the same gate: Groot showed mercy, and Planet X threw him out for it.
A being expelled for valuing one stranger's life above his whole culture's orders was never going to struggle with the outlaw-band-as-family arrangement he settled into afterward.
His people's children absorb the collected wisdom of the Arbor Masters through photosynthesis, so banishment cost the young exile his education, his inheritance and his entire species in a single stroke.
