Everybody knows the bargain. In 1972, stunt rider Johnny Blaze sold his soul to save his foster father, Crash Simpson, from cancer — and Mephisto collected by bonding him to a demon and turning him into the Ghost Rider (Marvel Spotlight #5, 1972). What almost nobody knows is how the debt finally settled: decades later, Blaze did not just escape Hell. He took the place over.
The opening came in 2018. Mephisto ran a Las Vegas gambit that got him dragged to Earth and locked away in a prison of his own making, leaving the throne of Hell sitting empty mid-war (Doctor Strange: Damnation #1–4, 2018). Blaze had died in the chaos — which, for once, was the lucky break. Down in the pit with no master on the seat, he fought his way to the vacant throne and claimed it in Damnation: Johnny Blaze — Ghost Rider #1 (2018).
Hell under new management was not an improvement for the damned. As king, Blaze gained the Damnation Stare — a hellfire gaze that does not stop at punishing sinners; it collects them, dragging condemned souls straight down (Ghost Rider Vol. 9 #2, 2019). He hunted escaped demons, muscled the rival hell-lords circling his crown, and ran the underworld the way a biker runs a bar fight: personally, and with chains.
The crown, though, came with the fine print the devil never advertises: the sins of the damned soaked into whoever wore it. The longer Blaze ruled, the more Hell’s corruption rewired him, until the warden was becoming the worst prisoner in the place. So in Ghost Rider Vol. 9 #7 (2020), the King of Hell did the one thing no devil before him had managed — he abdicated, walking away from absolute power over the dead before it finished swallowing what was left of Johnny Blaze.
Why It's Obscure
He sold his soul to the devil. Then he took the devil’s job.
