Today's Fact
Her people's murder sat twenty years in her future when Thanos pulled her out of it, which makes her revenge the strangest cold case in Marvel history.
Gamora was born roughly twenty years ahead of the era she grew up in, on a world whose people, the peaceful Zen-Whoberi, were destined to be herded into a valley and exterminated by the Grand Inquisitors of the Universal Church of Truth. Thanos travelled to that future, found the infant sole survivor of a massacre that had not yet occurred from his perspective, and carried her back through time to raise aboard Sanctuary as a weapon aimed at the Church's leader, the Magus.
Her training had a practice phase with a body count: before ever facing the Magus, the grown Gamora hunted down and killed the Church's Grand Inquisitors — the very men who would one day slaughter her people. The revenge worked on the timeline as well as the men; with the Church broken and the Magus defeated, the Zen-Whoberi genocide by the Inquisitors never took place at all, unwritten by the one person it was done to.
Here is the cruel bookkeeping of time travel, though: rewriting who held the knife did not save her people. In the altered history, the Zen-Whoberi were wiped out anyway — this time by the alien Badoon, in the past rather than the future. Gamora remains the last of her kind in both versions of events, an orphan of two different genocides, only one of which she was ever able to answer for.
Why It's Obscure
She killed her people's murderers before they committed the murder — and the universe simply hired different murderers.
