Today's Fact

Left for dead at the bottom of the world, Remy LeBeau found exactly one way to stay alive down there — and it came with a tenant.

GAMBIT SURVIVED ANTARCTICA BY LETTING A DEAD MUTANT’S GHOST MOVE INTO HIS BODY — AND SHE REFUSED TO MOVE OUT!
The Featured Fact

Abandoned in Antarctica after his trial, starving and freezing, Gambit crawled back into Magneto’s deserted citadel and found a containment vessel holding the psionic essence of Mary Purcell — a mutant whose body had turned to living energy years earlier and who had been sealed away after trying to possess Magneto himself.

Remy let Mary’s energy enter his body, and her power kept him alive without food until he reached the Savage Land. The arrangement curdled fast: Mary revealed herself as possessive and jealous, claimed Gambit as her beloved, and threatened to kill Rogue if he returned to her — gratitude with a hostage clause. (Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #350, 1997; Gambit Annual Vol. 1 1999)

Mary eventually dragged Gambit to her Indiana hometown intending to merge with him permanently and create a new hybrid lifeform of flesh and sentient energy. Rogue arrived with a containment device to sever the bond; Gambit destroyed the device trying to save Mary from dissipating — and the explosion scattered her anyway, ending the strangest survival pact of his life.

Why It's Obscure

The Antarctica exile is famous. The ghost who served as his life-support system — and then his stalker — is the part the retellings skip.

Indiana
Mary Purcell, before — Purcell’s mutation manifested in her teens and converted her whole body into electromagnetic energy; the accident killed those around her and left her a wandering wraith.
The vessel
Magneto’s souvenir — After Mary tried to possess Magneto, he trapped her energy in a container in his Antarctic base — where a starving Gambit found her fourteen years later.
#350 · 1997
The bargain — In the wake of Uncanny X-Men #350’s trial and abandonment, Gambit accepted Mary’s bond as survival: her energy sustained him on the trek to the Savage Land.
Annual ’99
The eviction — Gambit Annual Vol. 1 1999 closed the story: Rogue’s containment device, Gambit’s last-minute mercy, and an explosion that dissipated Mary for good.
