Today's Fact
The card-throwing thief spent his prime years running on reduced power — because he once asked a villain to perform the reduction.
Before the X-Men ever met him, young Remy LeBeau was losing a fight against his own gift. His kinetic power kept growing past anything he could govern, surging through him in amounts he simply could not withstand, and the master thief who could steal anything could not steal a quiet day inside his own skull. Desperate, he went to the one surgeon no sane mutant would visit: Mister Sinister.
Sinister agreed to help, at a geneticist's definition of the word. He operated on Gambit's brain and removed a portion of the tissue governing that runaway energy, leaving Remy markedly weaker yet finally able to aim what remained. The exploding playing cards, the charged staff, the manageable fireworks — that entire familiar arsenal is the regulated edition of a far larger endowment, installed by an enemy's scalpel.
Help from Sinister always invoices later. Gambit spent years working the debt off in errands for the man, and the arrangement stayed buried until Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #350 (1997), where his history with Sinister was dragged into the open in front of his teammates. Later still, on a trip into the nineteenth century, a younger Sinister put the missing piece back at Gambit's own request — and Remy eventually burned that restored surplus away, settling for good at the level the surgery had set.
Why It's Obscure
Most heroes visit a doctor to get stronger; Remy booked an appointment to get weaker, and paid for it for a decade.
