Today's Fact
The most dangerous version of Remy LeBeau never threw a card at the X-Men — he aimed his power at his own world, and nobody there survived it.
Somewhere in the multiverse sits an Earth with nobody left alive on it, and the man who emptied it answers to the same face as Remy LeBeau. The alternate Gambit called New Sun was never adopted by the Thieves Guild of New Orleans, so he never took the name Remy LeBeau — and he never had Mister Sinister cut into his brain to keep his powers in check. Raised instead as the fulfillment of an ancient Guild prophecy, he grew up with his kinetic-charge gift running at full, unfiltered strength.
His breaking point came during a ritual meant to restore a lost kingdom, when he tried to channel the energies of a long-dead king and the power answered all at once. The chain reaction burned every living person on his Earth to ash, leaving one survivor standing in the ashes of everyone he had meant to save. This was a mutant strong enough to have beaten his own reality's Phoenix, yet all that power could not rewind a single second — his attempts to manipulate time instead tore open the Spiral of Worlds and spilled him into other realities.
Reality after reality, he found the same pattern waiting: ruins, and a Gambit somewhere near the cause. So he came to Earth-616 to deal with our Remy before the story repeated, first posing as a benefactor who pulled Gambit out of Antarctica, then scheming to move this planet's whole population to a fresh world parked on the far side of Earth's orbit. When the scheme collapsed he dragged Gambit home to his ash-covered Earth for a final duel, where Remy fed his own charge back into him, overloaded him, and burned out the restored power Sinister's old surgery had once kept buried — the showdown told across Gambit Vol. 3 (1999–2001).
Why It's Obscure
Our Gambit begged a villain to lobotomize him; the other one skipped the appointment, and it cost a planet its population.
