The most dangerous man in any casino owns three completely ordinary house cats: Oliver, Figaro and Lucifer. Their route into Remy LeBeau’s life was anything but ordinary — according to the Marvel Database, the trio were originally captured by Sabretooth, who intended them as a snack, before Mystique rescued them and left them in Gambit’s apartment for him to adopt.
Even their names carry a hidden theme. Figaro matches Geppetto’s cat in Disney’s Pinocchio (1940), Lucifer matches Lady Tremaine’s cat in Disney’s Cinderella (1950), and Oliver matches the orphaned kitten of Disney’s Oliver & Company (1988) — three Disney cats, rehomed to a Cajun thief who never stood a chance of refusing them.
And no, they are not secret mutants. Gambit has confirmed in-story that his cats have no special powers whatsoever — which, given that they have racked up dozens of appearances between them and now live as family with Gambit and Rogue, makes them possibly the most successful unpowered supporting cast in X-Men history.
Why It's Obscure
A feral mutant’s lunch order, a shapeshifter’s delivery service, and three Disney namesakes who ended up owning the apartment.
