Dying in Otherworld carries a surcharge no other death in the Krakoan age does. A mutant killed there cannot be cleanly resurrected by the Five, because the realm scrambles the pattern and the returned mutant comes back as an amalgam of alternate selves. In Knights of X #5 (2022), Gambit pays that price in full: after overcharging the Death card from a stolen tarot deck and detonating himself against Merlyn's forces, his body vanishes into Mercator, the realm hidden inside the Siege Perilous.
What his teammates pull out of the castle of giant playing cards waiting there is Remy wearing his worst year on his face. The restored Gambit has slipped back into the form Apocalypse forced on him as the Horseman Death — ink-black skin, stark white hair, and burning red eyes — a shape he had not worn since he escaped that master's service. Death in Otherworld had reached for the darkest version of him in the deck and dealt it face up.
Force alone could not fold him back. Captain Britain stabbed into his mind to crack the Death persona's grip while Rachel Summers held the shape of the true Gambit together, and the deciding card was Rogue: her arrival through a new Krakoa gate gave her husband an anchor in his real life strong enough to choose it. Gambit was formally restored to himself — proof that even an Otherworld death can be beaten home, if the people who love the lost mutant refuse the shuffled version.
Why It's Obscure
Otherworld did not just kill the Ragin' Cajun. It reshuffled him, and the card that came up was Death.
