GAMBIT'S FIRST X-ADVENTURE PARTNERED HIM WITH A CHILD STORM — IN CAIRO, ILLINOIS!
The Featured Fact

Gambit's first appearance did not introduce him to the X-Men. It introduced him to a pickpocket. In Uncanny X-Men #266 (August 1990), by Chris Claremont, the mutant weather goddess Storm had been regressed to childhood by the villain called the Nanny, her memories scrambled, surviving as a street thief in Cairo, Illinois — and Remy LeBeau crossed her path while she was working the crowds.

The meeting turned into a rescue. The telepathic predator known as the Shadow King wanted the de-aged Ororo for his Hounds, and his agents were already closing in on the girl. Gambit — a professional thief with no team, no cause and every reason to walk away — chose her side instead, fighting beside a child who could summon storms she barely remembered commanding.

The partnership stuck. Across Uncanny X-Men #267 (1990) and the issues around it, the two traveled as a thieving duo, grown Cajun card-thrower and miniature weather goddess, until Ororo's path led back to the X-Men — and Gambit followed her into the team, and into the roster spot he has held ever since. His entire heroic career starts with refusing to leave a kid behind.

Why It's Obscure

Before the X-Men trusted him, before Rogue, before the trials and the secrets — Gambit's résumé opened with babysitting a de-aged goddess through a manhunt, and it remains the purest mission statement he ever got.

Nanny
The de-aging — Storm's regression was the work of the Nanny, whose machine turned a founding X-Man into an amnesiac child small enough to vanish into a crowd.
Cairo
Illinois, not Egypt — the famous meeting happens in the American Cairo, a river town in Illinois — not the Egyptian city of Ororo's own thieving childhood, however poetic that would be.
1990
Uncanny X-Men #266 — Gambit's debut issue spends its spotlight not on the team he would join, but on the smallest possible version of the woman who would vouch for him.
Shadow King
The hunter — Amahl Farouk's agents wanted young Ororo as a Hound; Gambit's interference in that abduction is the first heroic act of his published life.
The duo
Thieves, briefly — the road trip that followed paired the two most natural thieves the X-Men ever fielded, at the one moment when only one of them was legally an adult.
