GAMBIT WAS STOLEN FROM HIS CRADLE BECAUSE OF HIS RED EYES

The Featured Fact

Remy LeBeau was born with red irises on solid black eyes — and abandoned at birth because of them. Members of the New Orleans Thieves Guild then kidnapped the infant straight from his hospital ward and gave him a name in French: Le Diable Blanc, the White Devil. The Guild believed the red-eyed child matched a prophecy — he would grow up to unite the warring Thieves Guild and Assassins Guild of New Orleans.

The Guild handed the boy to Fagan's gang of street thieves, who raised him on rooftops and taught him the trade. At about ten years old, Remy tried to pick the pocket of Jean-Luc LeBeau, patriarch of the Thieves Guild. Getting caught turned out to be the luckiest break of his childhood: Jean-Luc took the boy off the streets and adopted him as his own son.

The prophecy kept steering his life from there — including the arranged marriage to Bella Donna Boudreaux of the Assassins Guild, arranged to seal the peace his birth was supposed to guarantee. That wedding ended with her brother Julien dead in a duel and Remy exiled from the city, but the name the Guild gave him in the cradle stuck in its histories: the devil-eyed baby was always meant to be a bridge between two houses of killers and thieves.

Why It's Obscure

Most X-Men origin stories start with powers erupting in adolescence. Remy's started in a maternity ward, the moment strangers decided his eyes made him a prophecy.

The eyes

Red on black from birth — the feature that got him abandoned, kidnapped, named, and eventually adopted. His whole childhood was negotiated around two eyes.

The prophecy

Guild lore promised a child who would end the feud between Thieves and Assassins. The Guild decided a newborn with burning red eyes fit the description.

The adoption

Jean-Luc LeBeau caught ten-year-old Remy's hand in his pocket — and responded by making the pickpocket his heir instead of his prisoner.

The name

Le Diable Blanc predates the codename Gambit by years. The first people to mythologise Remy LeBeau were the ones who stole him.
